Lázaro Barbosa de Souza: the Vidal family, the manhunt, and the limits of the inquiry
In June 2021, four members of the Vidal family were killed in rural Ceilândia. Investigators named Lázaro Barbosa de Souza the principal suspect; police pursued him for 20 days and killed him in Goiás. The dossier follows the early evidence, the search, misinformation, and legal developments through 2026 without treating allegations as a conviction.

The place behind the manhunt
In June 2021, Incra 9, a rural area of Ceilândia in Brazil’s Federal District, became the starting point of a search crossing into Goiás. Smallholdings, local roads, and stretches of Cerrado connect it with Cocalzinho and Águas Lindas de Goiás. The atlas marks only the approximate center of Ceilândia; the victims’ home is not a visitor destination. Lázaro Barbosa de Souza became famous as a fugitive, but the story began with four identifiable people and a criminal investigation, not with the image of a man who seemed to disappear in the forest.
Cláudio, Cleonice, Gustavo, and Carlos Eduardo
Cláudio Vidal de Oliveira, Cleonice Marques, and their sons Gustavo Marques Vidal and Carlos Eduardo Marques Vidal ran a flower nursery beside their smallholding. In reporting after the funeral, friends told Correio Braziliense how the family welcomed acquaintances, worked at the nursery, and was recovering from COVID-19. Carlos Eduardo was still a pupil at CED Incra 8; Gustavo had graduated there and worked with his father. These affectionate recollections are testimony, not crime evidence, but keep the four from becoming merely “the murdered family” in a timeline devoted to the suspect.
The early hours of June 9
According to the investigation as reported at the time, an intruder entered the property in the early hours of June 9, 2021. Cláudio, Gustavo, and Carlos Eduardo were found dead; Cleonice was taken away. A Federal Highway Police statement issued during the operation described the three killings and the abduction. Lázaro was named the principal suspect, but he died before he could be tried for the four deaths: police attribution must be distinguished from a conviction that never occurred. A report based on Federal District forensic officers explains that fingerprints recovered at the scene were compared through an automated system and helped identify him quickly. The system proposed candidates; trained examiners and further inquiries reached the conclusion.
Cleonice and the days of waiting
As the search expanded, relatives looked for Cleonice. Her body was found days later in a stream in the Sol Nascente area. Reports citing the forensic examination recorded sexual violence against her. The order matters: the three men were found at the smallholding, while Cleonice was abducted and located later. Retellings sometimes collapse the deaths into one scene and erase the family’s days of uncertainty. At the funeral, friends and relatives asked for justice while trying to preserve memories of the family’s life beyond the violence.
A trail across the Federal District and Goiás
Police searched for Lázaro in the Federal District and surrounding Goiás. During the 20-day pursuit, investigators attributed to him invasions of rural homes, hostage-taking, theft, and shootings that injured residents and an officer. A June 17 video report from Cocalzinho includes testimony from a property owner who was held hostage. These incidents guided patrols and frightened residents; not every event narrated during the flight became a concluded case. The investigation into the Vidal family and the inquiries into offenses along the route should not be compressed into one sweeping verdict.
An expanding operation
Federal District and Goiás police, the Federal Highway Police, and other teams established searches in wooded areas and checkpoints on roads. The highway force reported barriers on the BR-070 and an average of about 45 officers a day in road support. The total contingent changed over time: a June 26 report cited more than 270 officers. Later accounts mention helicopters, drones, and thousands of calls to the task force. Those figures describe different moments and parts of the operation; they cannot be added together. Broad terrain, vegetation, and unreliable tips complicated the task of identifying useful leads.
Shelter during flight is not proof of a murder plot
In July 2021, the Goiás Public Prosecutor’s Office said a court had accepted charges against a farmer accused of sheltering Lázaro between June 18 and 24 and obstructing the search. The prosecutors themselves requested closure of the inquiry into an employee initially suspected, finding insufficient grounds to attribute knowing assistance. Accepting charges permits a case to proceed; it is not a conviction. Proceedings involving the farmer ended after his death, reported in 2023. Suspected help during flight differs from the separate suggestion, raised by relatives and discussed in the press, that someone commissioned the Ceilândia killings. The sources examined establish no such instigator.
The “serial killer” label and earlier records
The phrase “Federal District serial killer” dominated headlines, although experts cautioned that it was premature to classify the June sequence without properly analyzing distinct episodes. Lázaro had earlier criminal records and proceedings, including for sexual violence; that does not justify adding every prior allegation to the Vidal case or making a retrospective psychiatric diagnosis. The verifiable framework is narrower: a mass killing under investigation, a flight accompanied by further incidents attributed to the suspect, and a death during police action. A television nickname is neither a judicial finding nor a substitute for reconstructing individual events.
“Rituals,” religion, and disinformation
During the search, news reports linked religious objects to supposed “rituals” and “Satanism.” G1 removed that connection, changed an article, and apologized, acknowledging that the objects established neither a specific faith nor a link to the crimes. A critique by Intercept Brasil documented allegations of violence and stigma directed at Afro-Brazilian religious communities. Fake links imitating G1 pages and invented claims that the fugitive had reached other states also circulated; Agência Lupa checked them. The existence of these rumors is documented; their content is not evidence about the case. Fear cannot turn a religious practice into a criminal clue.
The end on June 28
Police found Lázaro in Águas Lindas de Goiás on June 28, 2021, and he died after officers shot him. Correio Braziliense obtained the officers’ initial incident report and published its account of an order to surrender and an exchange of gunfire; it also recorded at least 125 shots fired by officers. An incident report is an official initial account, not an independent observation of every second of the confrontation. Shots fired are not the number of bullets that struck a person. His death ended the pursuit but prevented a trial in which prosecution and defense evidence about the 2021 family killings could be tested publicly.
The death inquiry and the 2026 update
The police action was examined in a military inquiry. In 2026, a Goiás court closed another inquiry into Lázaro’s death after prosecutors argued that the same events had already been examined and there was no substantial new evidence to continue. According to the decision reported by UOL, genuinely new evidence could permit a new investigation. This development is not a verdict on the Vidal killings and does not prove every detail in the initial incident report independently. The questions are legally distinct: what happened to the family, and whether there were grounds to hold officers criminally responsible for the suspect’s death.
Questions his death left unanswered
Three months after the killings, the inquiry into the Vidal family remained unfinished, Correio reported. Police said they could not yet say whether Lázaro had acted alone; contract-killing and land-dispute stories were not their main lines of inquiry. A December 2023 report still distinguished the family-killing inquiry from the then-closed case about the farmer’s alleged assistance during flight. The material reviewed here establishes neither a definitive motive nor a later judicial finding of an instigator. Suspected help during the pursuit cannot be turned into proof of participation in the initial attack.
The boundary of the evidence
Documented: four members of the Vidal family died; investigators identified Lázaro as principal suspect; a task force searched for him for 20 days; he died in police action on June 28, 2021; an inquiry into his death was closed by a 2026 court decision. Attributed by police or witnesses: details of individual crimes during the pursuit and of the final gunfight. Not established by the sources reviewed: an instigator of the killings, “rituals” as a cause, or a conviction of Lázaro for the Vidal case. The case calls for attention to victims, physical evidence, the limits of the operation, and the harm done by disinformation.
